Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a haven to all people regardless of their background or color without discrimination or prejudice. Our objective is to assist those very people in pursuing their educational and career goals. We will do so by establishing focused programs geared to provide the necessary workplace and developmental training for success. Additionally, we will assist the youth, young adults and seniors by offering dynamic mentoring and academic after school tutoring programs. Successful outcomes will be help empower our community through enrichment initiatives.

Reading Acceleration

Accelerated tuition free Reading  tutoring for K-8th grade students attending any school in the greater Columbus, OH area.   Although tutoring already began on September 23, 2024, we still have slots available. Hurry! Once these slots fill up open enrollment will be closed. We also provide nutritious meals for all students at no additional cost.

Mathematics Tutoring

Math tutoring is available for K-8th grade students who test out of Reading with a score of 90 or above on their reading preassessment. Students will be continious progress monitored at intervals of at least every 4 tutoring weeks. 

Why must all students be tested in reading first? Low math scores are an indication of reading comprehension issues that need to be resolved first.

Homework Help & Study Strategies

Parents are encouraged to ensure that students bring their homework to all tutoring sessions so that they can receive help with their homework at the homework help tables on a regular basis. Tutors will ask students if they brought their homework at the beginning of the tutoring day. 

Study skills are built into the tutoring hour to help your student learn more in less time.

Results Oriented Test Preparation

Effective Dec 2, 2024, students will have at least 15-20 minutes each day to go over reading and or math fundamentals at the computer lab.

Lessons will be on a group and individual academic level for student accelerateion.   

Standardized test preparation with engaging academic coaching is also included.

Nutritious Meals

A snack is offered at the beginning of the tutoring day usually around 4:30 p.m. Dinner is served at  6:45 p.m. so that students will not be hungry once they get back home. Meals are designed to meet Child and Adult Care Food Program Guidelines. No grain based desserts will be served. View the monthly menu click here.

Mentoring & Fitness 

Students are encouraged to partake in auxillary activities for energy balance and mentoring opportunities. Although lessons have mentoring ideaology and discussions built in, students are encouraged to mentor one another and/or to provide a basis of mentorship for others especially the younger students in the program.

Daily Tutoring Schedule

 SERC provides tutoring either M & W or T & Th  from 4:30 -7:30 p.m  (Monday -Thursday)

 4:30  to  4:45 p.m.

 Snack

 4:45  to 5:45 p.m.

 Reading/Homework

 5:45  to 6:45 p.m.

 Math/Homework 

 6:45  to 7:15 p.m.

 Hot Dinner 

 7:00  to 7:15 p.m.

 Mentoring, Fitness & Games 

 7:15 to  7:30 p.m. 

 Dismissal/Parent Pick Up

Multicultural Staff

Our academic team is made up of certified and special education teachers with over 15 years of experience that come from different social economic backgrounds.

Longterm tutors, teachers aide's and student interns provide additional academic supports and other engagement activities.

All program staff members must go through a BCI/FBI (all 50 states) background as well.

Attendance Requirements

Students are required to attend all scheduled sessions on time. Students who routinely arrive to class over 30 minutes late will be asked to come back on their next scheduled tutoring day.

Students who do not attend the program on a regular basis will be removed from the program after 4 consecutively missed tutoring sessions. Their slot will be filled by a student that is on the waiting list. 

Classroom Behavior

Tutoring sessions are designed on an accelerated basis. Students who act inappropriately with unacceptable behaviors will not be tolerated. 

We will attempt to redirect your student during the session 3. After that they will be moved to a quiet reflection location within the same room.  

If the behavior continues with no improvement within 4 weeks, your student will be removed from the program.

No Tutoring - November 27, 28 & 29, 2024 -  due to Federal Holiday - Thanksgiving Day - Classes resume Monday, December 2, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. 

No Tutoring - December 20 - January 3, 2025 - Winter Break

Tutoring Classes Resume - January 6, 2025 

Assessments - January 20-24, 2025
